Launch
Welcome to the launch of Martian Messages! I’m so excited to share this project with you all.
Before we get started I want to provide a few disclaimers:
COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER: This production consists of the original blog writings by Andy Weir. The novel published by Random House is copyrighted, but the book presented here is permitted for distribution, given that said distribution is free and no person receives monetary gain from the release.
Please do not send me money! This Substack is a free subscription for a reason, and I have not shared any other payment methods. Honestly, I really hope I don’t have to worry about this, but accepting any kind of tip (as much as I’d like to, this was a lot of work) could possibly violate the copyright agreement and get me in trouble, which is something none of us wants.
Because this was published on a blog, there are many spelling and grammar mistakes. The book you may be familiar with was sent through an editing firm, which removed many of these mistakes. An editing firm I am not, and I felt it would not be true to the nature of this project if I fixed any issues. If you see any mistakes, no you didn’t. <3
INFORMATION DISCLAIMER: I have tried to match the dates in the book with the dates in real life. Since Martian sols are not the same length as Earth days, I have done my best to convert between the two time systems. I have also attempted to place unmarked events in their proper places on the timeline, but this is all based on guesswork, so it may not be entirely accurate.
Please keep this in mind as you are reading. 🙂 Now, the book starts on November 12 (aka Sol 6), but for the sake of chronology, I’ll be posting several entries over the next couple of days. The first 5 are considered a set, sometimes called a variation of “Creation of Plastic.” Because you’re reading them before the rest of the book, I took the liberty of adding a note where they were originally placed (in case you forgot, or want to refresh your memory). I will not repost Creation of Plastic. (If you partook in Dracula Daily, this is sort of a reverse situation of the Demeter’s log.)
Whew! Now that that’s all said, I hope you enjoy Martian Messages!
Creation of Plastic: Part 1
The employees of Deyo Plastics worked double shifts. There was talk of triple shifts if NASA increased the order again. No one minded. The overtime pay was spectacular and the funding was limitless.
Woven carbon thread ran slowly through the press, which sandwiched it between polymer sheets. The completed material was folded four times and glued together. The resulting thick sheet was then coated with soft resin, and taken to the hot-room to set.
